Ever been working on a kitchen project and thought ‘if only I had a …’? We talked to some of the UK’s leading designers about the one invention that would really make a difference to their lives, why it would benefit them and how it might be delivered

The dream:
The Illuminator Wall.
My idea is for a wall of light, formed of continuous, flush, semi-opaque back-lit glass. It could be full height wall but also applied behind and above a run of kitchen base units. This extraordinary feature would offer both a highly variable lighting feature and a smart-networked source of information and text animation. Drawing, in part, from technology we have utilised in recent projects, including glass backsplashes and large-scale back lit photography, this dream is deliverable.

The dream:
Naked flames to bring hearth back to life.
Essential to a real kitchen and rarely catered for is a working hearth – it’s something I crave. In my dream kitchen there would be a raised-height fireplace but with a triple function. It would be visible when standing behind an island cooling and high enough to be used as a space heating system and a fire for gathering around.
It would fill a gap too, as proper chargrills for domestic kitchens don’t exist. Infrared grills in ovens are awkward to use, perform poorly and five off terrible fumes when you switch over functions.
Even if used occasionally, what a triumph it would be to cook on and when you had those lone moments you would have flames for the fire for companionship.

The dream:
A temperature-controlled storage device for organic vegetables.
Every Sunday I get a basket of healthy organic salad and vegetables from our local farmer’s market. I wash and sort them before squeezing parsnips, cabbages and potatoes into the salad compartment of my fridge, or balancing them on the shelves, I’ve tried keeping them in airy wicker baskets but it’s not satisfactory, especially in warm weather. I’d love a cabinet that would take them as they come. It would wash and dry the root vegetables, and gentle wipe les-dirty veg like butternut squash and cucumbers. It would separate and wash lettuce leaves. All would be cleaned and sorted and then stored at the optimum temperature for maximum freshness. And it would be helpful to know how long I have left before freshness wear off, a sort of sell-by-date monitor on each shelf.
